So, Dylan the African Pygmy Hedgehog is now 5 months old and fully settled in to our little family. With him being such a loved member of the family I love to spoil him with treats, toys and extra posh bedding.
So when it comes to buying gifts for an African Pygmy Hedgehog you may begin to wonder where to start and what sorts of gifts are a good idea. So far Dylan is far from fussy and loves everything, food being his favourite treat.
Tasty Treats
As standard African Pygmy hedgehogs should be given a varied diet consisting of live food, chicken, eggs, veg and biscuits. Extra tasty snacks can be given as treats, Dylan’s favourite snack is any meat variety of the cat treat “Dreamies”. As much as Dylan loves his snack of Dreamies, he has been known to have a little habit of munching half the dreamy and leaving the other half in random places, one time this happened to be in my work cardigan!
Toys
From crinkle balls, cat toys, tunnels and little teddies African Pygmy Hedgehogs love to explore, hide and play with everything in their soundings. When selecting toys for an African Pygmy Hedgehog it is important to choose ones with no loose parts, sharp edges or cat nip inside them.
Spa Day
A spa day with Dylan really isn’t as relaxing as it sounds, luckily African Pygmy Hedgehogs should be bathed once a month at most. Bathing more frequently can cause skin problems and fungal infections which no one wants for their little guy or girl. Dylan’s spa day incorporates a luxury bath using Aveno bath oil, a nail trim and long cuddles in a towel to make sure he is fully dry and toasty. This process can require a little bit of time and patience, as Dylan really isn’t too fond of bath time or someone trimming his precious claws of fury.
Extra Posh Bedding
When investigating the African Pygmy Hedgehog community, there are a number of people out there who make bespoke items to improve your hedgehogs habitat. One of the people who really stood out to me was a lady who made bespoke bedding and cosy items. Unfortunately her waiting list is extremely long, however this is due to this being her hobby and her making these items in her free time.
